INSTITUTION BUILDING

Institution-building has been one of FDNC's program areas for a number of years. In this capacity, FDNC has played a key role in coordinating opportunities for several NGOs in the Mbale area, including coordination of volunteers.

However, there is currently an opportunity to greatly expand FDNC's institution building role.

FDNC would like to coordinate a regional institution building collaborative among 10-15 NGOs in the area.

FDNC's goal through this project is to strengthen the organizational operations and capacity of each and every one of the participating organizations in order to better serve the broader needs of the surrounding communities.

The Foundation for Development of Needy Communities (FDNC) could do so by inviting the Executive Directors of local NGOs to join an "Institution Building Collaborative" that meets once monthly (for a half day or full day each time) to accomplish the following:

1. Share "best practices" in a range of operational areas (e.g., financial management, staff recruitment and hiring, staff training, personnel management, fundraising, facilities management, meeting effectiveness, reporting and accountability, marketing and communications, technology tools, etc.) in order to improve organizational effectiveness.

To do so, we have been in contact with organizational leaders who are experts in the specific areas financial management, project organization, management, entrepreneurship, fundraising, etc., that will offer half/full day sessions for the Executive Directors and another key staff members from each of the participating organizations.

The sessions would need to be "hands on" where the facilitator for the day teaches others how he/she handles the operational work in that area (in the case of BCC, manage their finances). The desired outcome would be for each of the other organizations to walk away with the tools and resources they need to improve their operations.

There could also be sessions to share "best practices" around topical areas (e.g., community health care, nutrition, primary education, secondary and vocational education, human rights, etc.), but these might be secondary.

2. Build collaborative / cooperative efforts between and among organizations in order to maximize effectiveness and service, avoid duplication of efforts/services, and leverage limited resources. This may include coaching in areas of expertise.

3. Work toward sharing office space in order to reduce organizational costs, improve collaboration, and promote more regular sharing of best practices.

This last objective is the primary rationale for the construction of a new facility that will contain FDNC's new headquarters, provide a large common space from which many NGOs can work collaboratively on regional needs, and house FDNC’s new music school on the first floor of the building. The need for this building is urgent. Part of the foundation for the building has already been completed, but FDNC needs additional funding to continue construction.
