BREAKDANCE PROJECT UGANDA WORKSHOPS
FDNC is collaborating with Breakdance Project Uganda (BPU), a community-based organization from Kampala which uses breakdance
to bring about positive social change. BPU teaches breakdance and hip-hop to empower disadvantaged children and youth with
self-confidence, self-esteem, and conflict resolution skills. One of BPU's main objectives is to bridge the gaps between
advantaged and underserved communities by bringing youth from both groups together to interact, form new friendships, exchange
skills, and create opportunities for each other. This new collaboration between FDNC and BPU was kicked off in May 2007 with a
three-day workshop held at the FDNC Vocational Skills Training Center. The workshop was sponsored by Chris Martinez, a donor from
San Francisco, California. Students at the school as well as local community members attended, and participated in a beginner
course in breakdancing, with specific focus on B-Boying. Participants learned basic uprock, footwork, freezes and creating their
own simple routines. FDNC hopes to host BPU quarterly, and to send the best students from the workshops to Kampala for further
instruction whenever possible.
