GIRL-CHILD EMPOWERMENT PROJECT
Funded by Church World Service, the Girl-Child Empowerment Project is in its second year of operation. Part of FDNC's Community-Based Health and Development Program, this project seeks to improve the economic opportunities and living conditions of 300 orphaned and vulnerable girls from 20 different rural communities by promoting education, life and entrepreneurial skills, and income-generating activities. Initially, this project provided school fees for the beneficiaries, but it has now evolved into a more sustainable model. Specifically, the project now invests in income-generating activities, such as animal husbandry projects.
The project has seven major components:
- Life Skills Training (family planning, sexuality, making smart choices, etc.)
- Provision of Basic Necessities (such as beddings, scholastic materials, medical care, etc.)
- Entrepreneurship Training (income vs. expenditure, simple budgeting, marketing, etc.)
- Access to Microfinance Loans (average - $50 per household)
- Agricultural Income Generating Activity (upland rice)
- Animal Husbandry Income Generating Activity (turkey, goat, pig, poultry)
- Quality of Life Improvement Project (fuel saving stove/tree planting project)
This project has also provided funding for training for FDNC staff and Community Health Workers in community development and microfinance.
MOSQUITO NET AND GOAT REARING PROJECT
Sponsored by PONT-Mbale, this project provides mosquito nets, primarily to children five and under, as well as goats to needy families in rural communities in the Mbale District.
BEEKEEPING PROJECT
FDNC has begun a collaboration with the ugive2uganda Mbale Community Farm and Hives Save Lives Africa, to support the development of sustainable beekeeping projects in rural communities throughout Eastern Uganda. Two carpentry students from the FDNC Vocational Skills Training Center will be sent to the Hives Save Lives training facility in Kampala for instruction in how to build modern hives, and will then begin constructing hives for sale in the Mbale area. The Mbale Community Farm will be training villagers from around the region in proper beekeeping procedures, with the goal of helping rural communities to generate additional income through honey and beeswax sales.
